    I have some screen I used in a diy sifter. It catches cocoons and most worms. Would that be an idea for the bottom bin? It would prevent ANY worms getting into the leachate bottom area, and it is flexible and easy to pull up and dump out for sifting finished compost. Also, get idea to use the risers! Thanks for this video!

    You have me really thinking about making those little risers for my Vermihut. I like the experiment, I would figure the frozen would go faster but who knows what the worms will do. I’m with you it’s easier to add some bedding to the bottom and clean it out every once in a while. 😁🪱🪱

    Hey Anne! That's a decent handful of grown up worms you've got from the 'juice collection tray'. They sure will help in the working tray. ;) EDIT: Just checked my collection tray, just emptied 2 weeks ago and here they're all again... 😂 I'd go with all frozen any day, if the freezer compartment wasn't choke full bc of... ice cream boxes. But we're planning on getting a real freezer soon (or shall we say, I'm giving in to my wife 😅). Subscribed already boss! 🙌 Cheers, have a great week! 🪱🪱☀️ -Thomas

    Your tower is really producing a lot of awesome castings. I find plastics in my natural bedding too, from raking up leaves, if the worms don't eat it it should not be in the garden. Freezing explodes the cell walls of the food, makes it more available to the microbes and the worms. This time of year, most of the food my worms get come out of the garden, the natural bedding has a ton of microbes that help break things down, 90% never makes it to the freezer. I had to start maintaining bedding below my CFT bin, started finding a few worms down there, now when I feed, I do what you do, take the bedding with the worms and put back on top. Nice video! Stay Well!!!

      Thank you. The plastic drives me a bit nuts. I live near a park so I have more trash in my yard than most people. If the worms kick it out no bueno for me either. 🪱😃👍🏼

    Is it just the lighting and or age of your vermipost that makes it look so light brown? Mine is always black as night once the castings start building up? Also what species of compost worms do you use, Red Wigglers? Ive been using Euro reds for about 3 years and never had a problem with how fast or slow they produce castings, i actually have just the opposite problem. Not only do i have a ridiculous amount of castings compared to what i sell, but i literally have to depopulate my smaller bins and move a hell of alot of worms to my big outdoor bed. I also collect eggs because i thought maybe i could sell some of the excess and use one bin as what i call the nursery. I guess i cant complain beacause having the problem of to much should be a blessing but i went from the newbie overprotective worm parent the first year to damn guys take it easy, your supposed to be the bigger slower family member. 🫣😬 P.S. sorry for my bla bla bla, i honestly didn't mean to turn my comment in to a bookment. 😆🤐😬

      My vermicompost is representative of the bedding I use. If there is lots of cardboard it is lighter. More leaves then it is darker. My 55 Gallon bin is a mix of reds, blues and euros. I make an actual ton a year and don't have enough to sell due to the size of my garden and landscaping. Maybe someday 👍🏼😃🪱

    I was given a worm tower and I borrowed your idea of using the pvc risers for the stackable trays. It sure helps to keep the trays from getting stuck. Also, I added fresh grass clippings with the shredded paper for my ENCs and they are loving it. We shall see if the castings and breeding will be successful. Thanks for your videos and valuable information. 😊

    In the autumn I pile leaves on my vegetable garden about two feet deep. In the spring these leaves are matted together into a six inch layer of wet leaves. I pull these into the corners to expose the soil for planting. These piles in the corners are used during the growing season to mulch the vegetables. By June the earthworms have populated the leaf piles heavily. The piles become a mixture of worm castings and leaves. By August the leaves are pretty much gone and I'm eagerly waiting for the autumn leaf drop. I get the benefits of the worm bin without any special care for the worms.

    I am surprised you don't use aged steer manure- this is what I do. I will add some cardboard but not as much as you--mostly green plants from the yard, leaves, eggs shells, veggies and fruits. Coffee grinds, old soil (to be renewed.) I don't use colored print. Pine animal bedding is also a thought for you--works well enough it's actually great for high alkaline clay soil. Worms really love the manure.

    I have my worms in an oid fridge,guts ripped out so i have enough room for a one person kitchen it has gause covered vent and a normal sealed fridge door it is laying on its back so the worms are worked one end to the other our morning winters are 6 degres cel to 27-28 c in the arvo all is good. But summer is 28 to 32 mornings midday 49 deg c . L cover the fridge with layers of shade cloth and rotate frozen plastic ice bags into their beding their life cycle slowes 80 %. I am curious about your use of bubble wrap could that heip my little friends? Thank you for your great videos

      Shade cloth will work. I know other people rotate out frozen water bottles. Evaporative cooling could work too. Wet towels on the top of the castings with a fan blowing. It's worth a try. Let me know how it works. Do you have a soil thermometer to see if it's working? 👍🏼🪱🙂

    How do you drain the worm tea

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed 7 днів тому

      I keep the moisture lower so there no leachate in the bin. If it starts to get wet I add dry shredded cardboard.😃👍🏼🪱

    Interesting how well those mosquito bits work. It's very hot here so I'm adding ice 🧊 cubes to the bins on the porch. 90's F is 😰

      It has been in the upper 90s here this week too. My peppers are loving it. The basement with the worms is about 80.👍🏼🙂🪱

    what are the light colored flecks in the worm castings? I have them in mine, and it seems like it's the shells of the cacoons?

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed 7 днів тому

      I believe it is chicken egg shell. It was not ground up into powder when I fed it to the bin.🪱👍🏼😃

    Hi Ann, I believe the BTI stay active only so long in the water - don't know if it diminishes after days or a couple weeks. I know AV had some BTI water that he thought expired in effectiveness after about a month. I guess that means the worms get newish cardboard shred if fungus gnats are a problem. So glad you got yours under control! ~ Sandra

    I’ve decided to start my own worm farm for the castings.. decided to start with like 12 worms, before I decide to order larger amounts .. if I can keep the 12 alive and good.. I’ll get more … but my thought is this- Could the stubby worms possibly be caused by mass interbreeding between the worms .. much like other animals

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed 8 днів тому

      That could be true about inbreeding. Good luck with your worms. 👍🏼🪱😁

      That video was a long time ago but if there is a little food left it's ok. This bin is highly populated. 👍🏼🪱😊

      Hi Ann how do you get the bedding so fine thanks

  • @ausfoodgarden
    @ausfoodgarden 9 днів тому

    Good to see you're getting on top of your pest issues and it's not detrimental to the worms at all. It's winter here and all my bins are outdoors so everything is just crawling along. We only get the occasional light frost so the worms are fine. Cheers!

      Do you have issues with critters getting in and eating the worms? My area gets very cold so I only chance one outside bin. 😊👍🏼🪱

    I use huge flower pots as mini composters all over the garden. Emptying one out today, I was finding HUGE worms. Six inches long and as wide as a pencil. Reddish on top but more beige on the belly and extremely iridescent. Any ideas what they might be?! Western Washington

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed 9 днів тому

      Wow, with all the iridescent I would think ANC but it might be a local worm type due to the pale belly. 👍🏼🪱🙂

    The Vermibag seems to me a long process with minimal results with your ANC ? Try and a mix and match of different worms to see if you get a different result as far as production , casting quality , and compatibility goes? Just a thought.😊

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed 9 днів тому

      The ANC have to stay in the bag. I try and keep them separate so I can show people how different worms behave. Blue is the only multi species bin. So far.

    Hello! I loved your microscopic camera video. So cool. Just wanted to share a great “worminar “ on UA-cam- NutriSoil featuring soil scientist Nicole Masters. It’s wonderful if you like nerding out on worms and worm compost. There’s a brief but deep dive into the microbiology of worm castings that I need to watch again.
